Who plays the dragon in the Netflix film Damsel?

Netflix recently released the epic 'definitely not a fairytale' fantasy film, Damsel, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie, a young woman who agrees to marry a handsome prince. However, she soon learns the marriage was all a trap, with the prince's family offering her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient royal debt.

Princess Elodie is then thrown into a cave with a terrifying fire-breathing dragon, who she must escape from if she wants to survive. But while Netflix managed to score a seriously star-studded cast, including the likes of Robin Wright, Angela Bassett, Ray Winstone, and Nick Robinson, there's a veil of mystery surrounding the part of the dragon.

So, who actually plays the dragon in Damsel, and what has the actor said about the role?

Who plays the dragon in Damsel?

Damsel's dragon was played by the Emmy-winning Iranian-American actor Shohreh Aghdashloo. Known for her roles in The Flight Attendant, The Expanse, The Odd Life of Timothy Green and House of Saddam, for which she won her Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy, Shohreh has been pretty open about her part in the Netflix film.

The 71-year-old actor recently revealed how she developed the voice of the dragon in a behind-the-scenes video posted to Tudum, by Netflix. She explained that she used a diaphragm voice, which she thought would be best for the character.

"Dragon is all diaphragm because she's been wounded badly and deeply," she said, adding: "And that's why the voice doesn't come from the head. It comes from the mansion full of pain."

Elsewhere, Damsel's director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has also been vocal about Shohreh's performance, commending the actor for bringing the important character to life.

He said: "It feels like we use a lot of sound effects on her voice, but we didn't. Her voice is completely broken and profound. Like you're hearing in the movie. It's so well-connected with this creature and the way that she literally reflects that pain and that grief that she's suffering. I think Shohreh did such an amazing job."

Damsel is now streaming on Netflix.
