What happened in the series?

The fourth and final season of Sex Education is finally here (yep, it's available to stream now!), and we're not quite ready to say goodbye to Otis, Maeve, Eric and the rest of our favourite Moordale Secondary students.

The series, which is dropping on Netflix on 21st September, will see Eric and Otis head off to sixth form, Maeve go to study in the US, Jean adapt to motherhood again and more. But, before it's time for the climax, here is a recap of everything that happened in season three of Sex Education. Enjoy!

Otis and Ruby start - and end - dating

Otis and Ruby begin hooking up in the summer and decide to go public with their relationship. They even go on a (very awkward) double date with Eric and Adam, but things become difficult when Ruby tells Otis she loves him, and he doesn't say it back.

He's still hung up on Maeve, that's why! Soon, he decides to end things with Ruby which leaves her heartbroken.

Hope takes over Moordale, and Moordale eventually closes down

There's a new headteacher at Moordale Secondary, Hope Haddon. While she seems cool at first, things quickly take a turn for the worst when she vows to rebrand the 'sex school' by implementing super strict rules, promoting complete abstinence and publicly shaming students, including Adam, Cal and Lily.

The students protest at the school's open day by holding a play all about sex and Otis tells Hope that sex isn't shameful. But, with funding from the school withdrawn, Moordale sadly closes down at the end of the season. The end of an era!

Cal and Jackson kiss but later break up

Jackson meets Cal, a new student who is non-binary and they begin to develop feelings for each other. But, things don't work out as Cal worries that Jackson doesn't properly understand their gender identity and queerness, so they decide to part ways.

Jean gives birth to Joy

Jean shares with Jakob, her on-again, off-again boyfriend and Ola’s dad, that she is pregnant. They get back together, with Ola moving in with Jean and Otis (awkward AF!).

She experienced a very difficult and almost life-threatening labour, but she survives and the family decides to name the baby Joy.

But, after giving birth, Jean opens up Joy’s paternity test and we learn that Jakob might not actually be Joy’s father. So, who is it? We need to know!

Eric and Adam break up

When Eric goes to Lagos, Nigeria, he kisses a boy named Oba and he and Adam break up.

Eric shares that he needs to be with someone who is okay with being queer, which Adam has struggled with throughout the season. “It’s not your fault,” Eric tells Adam. “We’re just going in different directions.”

Adam decides it’s time to come out as bisexual to his mother, Maureen, and reveals Eric was his boyfriend.

Aimee breaks up with Steve

After being assaulted in the previous season, Aimee has been struggling with intimacy with her boyfriend, Steve. Then, when Maeve and Aimee argue during the school trip to France, Maeve tells her that she is too scared to break up with Steve.

After some time, Aimee realises this is true and decides to end things with Steve.

Maeve and Otis finally get together

Isaac admits to Maeve that he deleted Otis' voicemail from the previous season, where he says he is in love with Maeve. So, she breaks up with Isaac.

After Otis breaks up with Ruby and a school trip to Paris gone wrong, leaving Otis and Maeve abandoned at a service station, the pair finally admit their feelings for each other.

Later in the season, they also admit that their clinic was partly about being closer to each other and they kiss as the rain pours down on them. So romantic!

But, when Maeve gets accepted into a prestigious school in the US and her mum, Erin, gives her the money to go, she decides to leave Moordale and Otis behind. Will they be able to make it work in season four?
