The 20 Best- and Worst-Dressed Celebs at the 2024 Oscars

1

Sandra Hüller in Schiaparelli

The star of Anatomy of a Fall and Best Actress nominee has shown a knack for slightly offbeat style choices during awards season. We really enjoyed this look for being elegant and restrained, but just weird enough to unsettle you a little, which seems to be exactly where her style preferences lie. The eye makeup and severe hair would not have been our suggestions for a dress like this, but they only add to that feeling of oddness for which she’s so well suited.

2

America Ferrera in Versace

The Barbie star strenuously avoided Barbiecore looks throughout the entire promotional tour and extending all through awards season, so this last-second explosion of classic sexy glam in a glorious Barbie pink was a pleasant surprise. Versace provided her with a chain mail gown fitted for the gods and she wisely opted to finish it off with one gorgeous necklace. It’s all she needed.

3

Colman Domingo in Louis Vuitton

The star of Rustin and Best Actor nominee distinguished himself throughout awards season by wearing some of the most stylishly bold and distinct menswear looks in the history of Oscar campaigning. We were thrilled to see him show up for the big night in more of the same. As always, the fit is impeccable, but it’s the stunning jewelry and footwear choices that make the look.

Billie Eilish in Chanel

While the hair and face were both looking pretty amazing, we can’t say we were in love with the rest of the Best Original Song nominee’s outfit. Thematically, we get why she went for a retro-schoolgirl look, but it just didn’t feel like the kind of thing a nominee wears to the Oscars. Her awards red carpet style tends to be more interesting than this, which felt like a bit of a cliché.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior Couture

The Dune: Part Two star sported an updated take on the classic Dior Junon dress. It may not be the freshest or trendiest of style for her, but she couldn’t be better suited to this twist on classic French couture elegance. Keeping the jewelry restricted to silver and diamonds gave the entire look a fantasy princess feel.

6

Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton

The Poor Things star and Best Actress nominee has been favoring red carpet looks that drew inspiration from the film’s stunning neo-Victorian costume design all year long and she continued that tactic by showing up in this sherbet colored strapless gown with a borderline ridiculous peplum. She has a knack for working odd colors and weird proportions, so we don’t mind the design. It’s styled perfectly with that stunning necklace.

Lupita Nyong'o in Armani Privè

The star came to present the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in an Armani Privè gown she said she’d been holding onto for a couple of years and chose to wear as an homage to the pale blue Prada gown she wore when she won her Oscar in 2014. She can make anything look dazzling by wearing it, but we have to admit we don’t love the shape of the straps or the placement of the feathers around the waist.

8

Emily Blunt in Schiaparelli

We felt like Oppenheimer star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt’s awards season style was a little bit off, but nothing could prepare us for the wacky Schiaparelli gown she chose for the Oscars. We all see the Y-front boy briefs, right? And the weird strap situation? All we can think is that she must have figured she wasn’t going to win, so she chose to wear something everyone would wind up taking about.

9

Danielle Brooks in Dolce & Gabbana

We can’t say we were blown away by the gown worn by the star of The Color Purple and Best Supporting Actress nominee at first sight. But the more we looked at it, the more we liked how perfectly it was styled from the hair, to the diamonds, to the mani/pedi. It’s a well put-together look that has a quiet, confident sort of glamor to it.

Ryan Gosling in Gucci

The Barbie star has been working one pastel-colored disco suit after another all year long while promoting the film. He loves an open shirt and a lapel with piping, so Gucci provided him with a slightly more formal and much more glamorous version for the big night. It’s sexy, a little sleazy, and perfectly suited to him.

11

Hailee Steinfeld in Elie Saab Couture

This is one of those gowns that you think is kind of nice at first glance and it just gets weirder and a little goofier the longer you look at it. The color story is lovely and she clearly enjoyed the floaty skirt. But the bust is wildly over-designed and looks a little craftsy. We might forgive that, but we really hate the whole cuff/non-sleeve situation. The design is just too clumsy for us to like it.

12

Florence Pugh in Del Core

96th annual academy awards arrivals florence pugh in del coreJohn Shearer//Getty Images

This is how we know the Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two star has become a red carpet powerhouse: We think she looks amazing here, but we’re pretty sure we don’t like the dress at all. The bodice is over-designed and a little goofy looking and we don’t think the color suits her all that well. But the hair and makeup is gorgeous and the jewelry is really well chosen. This is the power of good styling and a fashionista who knows how to work a look.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph in Louis Vuitton

davine joy randolph in louis vuittonFREDERIC J. BROWN//Getty Images

Our favorite red carpet “story” to watch is when an up-and-comer blazes her way through awards season, picking up better and better looks along the way, until she shows up on Oscar night looking drop-dead stunning in high-end fashion. Success, baby. The Holdovers star and Best Supporting Actress winner came to the Oscars positively dripping with it.

Ariana Grande in Giambattista Valli Couture

Thanks to Margot Robbie’s Barbie tour, you can expect the stars of the upcoming Wicked adaptation to lean hard into the method dressing trend for the red carpet. In other words, your Galinda is likely to be unleashing a lot of pink and sparkle. For tonight, she opted for wild amounts of volume, much in the classic Galinda mode. If anybody else were sporting that comforter on a red carpet, we’d be rolling our eyes, but she can get away with the absurdity of it.

15

Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton

96th annual academy awards arrivals cynthia erivo in louis vuittonMike Coppola//Getty Images

Similarly, your Elphaba is likely to be wearing a lot of green looks with a bit of an edge to them for the next year or so. This is hot, hard, and unlike anything else you saw on the Oscars red carpet tonight. We love how the jacket has a sort of dragon tail feel to it.

16

Lily Gladstone in Gucci

It has been a delight watching Killers of the Flower Moon star and Best Actress nominee Lily Gladstone support and highlight the work of Indigenous jewelry and fashion artisans throughout awards season. She took that approach further by bringing together the House of Gucci and Joe Big Mountain, a Comanche, Mohawk and Cree quillwork artisan. Together, they created this gorgeous, thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gown worthy of its wearer and Oscar history.

17

Margot Robbie in Versace

96th annual academy awards arrivals margot robbie in versaceMike Coppola//Getty Images

And just like that, the Barbie tour was declared completely over. It must be something of a relief for the Barbie star and Best Picture nominee to finally shed all of the pink she wore religiously for a year in promotion of the film. If anyone has earned the right to strip things back on her style for a while, it’s her. This is elegant and sophisticated in a way that says she’s a powerhouse who’s ready to move on to her next project.

18

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture

96th annual academy awards arrivals jennifer lawrence in dior coutureJohn Shearer//Getty Images

We feel two kinds of ways about this look. On the one hand, it’s beautiful, old school elegance with a classic French feel to it. Polka dots are a fun and unexpected choice, and as a presenter, she doesn’t need to try too hard or pull focus from the nominees. On the other hand, it feels just a little too low-key for the Oscars.

Zendaya in Armani Privè

96th annual academy awards arrivals zendaya in armani priveJohn Shearer//Getty Images

If you don’t want Zendaya to show up at the Oscars and upstage 95 percent of the red carpet, then don’t invite Zendaya to the Oscars. We love this for being such a flex. The Dune: Part Two star is in the biggest movie in the world and you have to know she’s going to hit that carpet looking like the world class movie star she is. This is gorgeous, with an old Hollywood feel that comes off effortless for her.

20

Michelle Yeoh in Balenciaga Couture

96th annual academy awards arrivals michelle yeohJohn Shearer//Getty Images

Last year’s Best Actress winner came to the Oscars looking like the elegant professional and well-established winner she is. We think what we love most about this look–aside from the pewter and silver combo–is how it feels so effortless and confident. The pressure’s off her and all she has to do is arrive looking like a movie star. Mission accomplished.
