Is Olly Rix leaving the series?

Call the Midwife is our go to Sunday night TV comfort show. From cute new arrivals, to heartwarming neighbourhood stories, to women supporting each other through their hardest moments, it's the most wholesome show, where nothing ever really goes too wrong. Except, we now regret to inform you that there may in fact, be some bad news. Olly Rix, aka Trixie's husband Matthew Aylward, is reportedly set to be leaving the show at the end of series 13.

Hardcore Call the Midwife fans will know Olly entered the show in series 10 as local business man Matthew Aylward. After the death of his first wife and mother of his son, he developed a relationship with Trixie (Helen George) and viewers finally saw Trixie get her much deserved happy ending in series 12 when the pair tied the knot.

However, before series 13 began, it was reported Olly Rix was departing the show at the end of the season. So why is he leaving the series? And what has he said about his departure? Here's what you need to know.

Is Olly Rix leaving Call the Midwife?

While filming was taking place for series 13 of Call the Midwife back in September 2023, a report in The Sun claimed Olly Rix's character Matthew was being written out of the series.

A source told the publication the scriptwriters had let Olly know on set.

"The news of Olly’s departure has left the cast and crew stunned and upset," a source told the publication. "They all thought he was a mainstay on the series after his prominent wedding scenes to Helen [Trixie] last season. Some feel it's a bit unfair and he is well liked by everyone. It felt very out of the blue."

As of yet the BBC is yet to confirm or deny Rix's future on the series.

What has Olly Rix said about leaving the series?

Since the reports Olly Rix is set to leave the series he hadn't said much about his future on the series. However, he recently hinted at his future on Call the Midwife during an interview with OK! magazine.

Speaking at the premiere of co-star's Helen George's musical The King And I on 1st February 2024, Rix said: "It’s great being part of the Call the Midwife family. For now. You’ve got to watch to the end of this series. There are a few surprises ahead, a few bumps in the road. We’ll see how much longer I’m part of the family!"

Um, excuse me? Does anyone else think this kind of sounds like a goodbye? We're really hoping not.

What would Olly Rix's departure mean for Trixie and Matthew?

If you've been watching the most recent series of Call The Midwife, you'll know things aren't looking great for Trixie and Matthew.

In the most recent episode (11th February) it was revealed Matthew had plunged his family's company into major debt, and he was removed from the board and stopped receiving a salary from them as well.

This revelation came after many episodes of Matthew acting unlike the character we've come to know and love. He's been short and sharp with Trixie (let's not forget that worrying request he made for Trixie to quit her job) and has been funny about spending what everyone presumed was a wealthy fortune.

However, now the latest episode is showing serious cracks in Matthew and Trixie's marriage, with Matthew reluctant for Trixie to help him fix the situation. If the reports of Olly Rix leaving the series are true could this mean the end of Trixie and Matthew's marriage?

Call the Midwife returns on 25th February 2024 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
