Do The Boys stop Homelander?

The stakes are higher than ever for Supes and Starlights in season four of The Boys as they go head to head, and we’ve explained the explosive ending of the series finale.

The Prime Video series is set in a universe where super-powered individuals are recognised as heroes, but a group of vigilantes set out to take down the corrupt superheroes who abuse their powers.

So, are Billy Butcher and The Boys able to take down Homelander? Plus, do they make the virus? Buckle up, because here is the ending of season four of The Boys explained.

Starlight tries to make a Supe virus

The episode begins with Frenchie working on the virus to take down Homelander and all Supes as the election results are counted, while the Shifter is pretending to be Annie and proposes to Hughie.

Meanwhile, Billy is in hospital after falling seriously ill and he is being tormented by Kessler, who is not real but living inside his mind, and he is telling Billy to train Ryan to take down Homelander, or kill him.

Plus, Homelander trashes his apartment in a fit of rage after finding a photo that Ryan kept of him with Billy, his dog and his mother, Becca. When Ryan comes home to the chaos, he is scared and quickly flees to meet Billy.

Homelander exposes Victoria as a Supe

On TV, Firecracker is interviewing Homelander and Vice President Victoria Newman. During the interview, Homelander exposes Victoria as a Supe live on air by attacking her, to which she heals immediately.

She confronts him, but he threatens her and says he will force her to become the first super-abled President. Then, she tells him he’ll have to arrest half his company.

To this, he instructs his assistant, Ashley, to make a list of all of Vought employees who may have damaging information on him, later brutally killing them all.

Annie kills Shifter Annie

Soon, the election results are certified but the virus isn’t ready, so Hughie gets his laptop to share the incriminating information they have on Victoria with the public to cause her to resign, but Shifter Annie has deleted all of the files.

To protect President Robert Singer, Mother Milk, Hughie, Shifter Annie and Kimiko are called to a safe bunker while Frenchie stays behind to finish making the virus to take out Victoria. In the bunker, Hughie soon realises that Annie is, in fact, the Shifter and assassin.

Shifter Annie then kills the majority of people inside and as she is about to kill Hughie, the real Annie arrives after breaking free, just in time to kill Shifter Annie and save Robert Singer’s life.

Billy kills Victoria

Billy receives a visit from Grace and Ryan in the hospital, where she admits to the young boy about the atrocities his father has committed and that he is the only one that can stop Homelander.

But, Ryan panics as he doesn’t want to kill his dad yet Grace says there is no other choice and she can’t let him leave. So, Ryan throws her against the wall, killing her instantly and flees. Looking at Grace’s body in disbelief, Billy now knows what he has to do.

He goes to meet The Boys, who are now working with Victoria after she called Hughie asking for help after Homelander threatened her and her daughter. She says she will help them stop Vought and Homelander, but Billy has other ideas when he arrives as he kills Victoria and steals the virus.

Senator Calhoun becomes President

The news of Victoria’s death comes to light, and just when it looks like Homelander is going to lose, Sage returns. She reveals her plan to frame Robert Singer for Victoria’s murder and she has Senator Calhoun on the phone ready to pledge him loyalty to Homelander.

Calhoun later becomes the Presiden and declares martial law, with Homelander now able to order an army of Supes to round up the Starlighters. Mother Milk, Kimiko, Frenchie, Hughie, and Annie almost flee the country, but they’re stopped by Homelander’s Supes, including Love Sausage who knocks out MM in an airport bathroom.

As Hughie and Annie are about to be arrested by Cindy and other authorities, Annie uses her powers to fly away. Meanwhile, Cate uses her powers to make Frenchie leave with her while Kimiko watches on, and regains her voice to cry out to him as they recently confessed their feelings for each other.

Then, we see Billy driving away with the virus in hand and Kessler appearing in the car mirror.
