Are Miranda Wilking and James Derrick still together?

Netflix's latest documentary Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult only dropped yesterday and yet we're already obsessed with the series, and the dancers featured in it, including couple Miranda and James Derrick, but are they still together?

In case you've not seen the three-part docu-series yet, Dancing for the Devil, focuses on the pastor at the exclusive Shekinah Church in LA and founder of 7M Films talent agency Dr Robert Shinn. Shinn's talent agency has been accused of being a cult, with former members accusing Shinn of coercion (both financial and sexual assault allegations) of which he has strongly denied.

The documentary series follows the Wilking family, who explain their now strained relationship with daughter Miranda, a TikToker, who is managed by 7M and their attempts at communicating with her. Miranda has always denied she and her husband James Derrick, aka BDash, are part of a cult.

Miranda and her husband have been together for a few years now, but are they still together? Here's what we know.

When did Miranda and James meet?

As mentioned in Dancing for the Devil, in April 2019 James aka BDash, a prominent dancer in the dance community, DMed Miranda and her sister Melanie.

The trio worked on a dance video together, before making a group chat, at which point Melanie was removed, and Miranda and James formed a connection.

The couple began to date, and stayed with the Wilking family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Miranda and James joined the 7M management company and continued to build their connection.

When did Miranda and James get married?

After two years of dating in August 2021, the couple announced they were engaged with a post on Instagram.

In Miranda's post of the news she said: "I said YES!!!💍 Words cannot explain how overwhelmed with joy I am. James, you are more than anything I’ve ever dreamed of and I am so incredibly excited that we get to spend our lives together. I remember the first day we met, I fell in love with you and just could not picture spending any of my days without you. It’s as if our love story was already written into the fabric of my life.

"You are my best friend, my confidant, my teammate and partner. You have continually proven to be such an incredible man inside and out and I love you so much. I am looking forward to watching our journey continue to unfold. Forever my love♥️ -Mrs. Derrick."

And then a month later in September, the couple shared a video of them dancing in Las Vegas, with Miranda wearing a white dress and James wearing a suit. She captioned the video: "What happens in Vegas…🤍✨" leading many people to believe the couple tied the knot there. Although the couple did not officially confirm they were formally married.

Are Miranda and James still together?

As of May 2024, James and Miranda are still together and frequently appear in dance videos with each other.

When the claims first aired alleging the couple were part of a cult, Miranda released a statement denying they were involved in a cult.

In a statement given to The Cut she said: "I am not held against my will and I’ve never been a hostage. I go to church and I have faith in God. If one day I wish to pursue my faith elsewhere, I will and feel completely free to do that. As far as my career, my time at 7M Films has been one of the most exciting years ever and if one day I wish to partner with a different management company or start my own company, I will.”

She continued, “No one is forcing me to do anything. I am excited to move forward in this incredible walk with God, an amazing marriage and exciting career. I’m also looking forward to moving past all of this and mend[ing] my relationship with my family privately.”

James also commented on the allegations, claiming the problem stemmed from racism.

Writing on his Instagram Story, James said: "[It] started with a white beautiful woman moving in with a poor Black man from Compton that the parents did not approve of." However, the Wilking family deny this.
